Looking for a quick and easy project to kickstart your sewjo? Then look no further! In this tutorial we are going to show you how to create a beautiful foldover clutch bag that is approximately 30 x 22 cm. You can make it as big or as small as you like by changing those dimensions. Keep in mind that you will need a different zipper length if you are changing the size of your clutch bag. So, let´s get creative!
What you need:
60 cm fabric
60 cm lining
30 cm (12″) zipper
Heavy weight fusible interfacing
Basic sewing tools and a sewing machine
Preparing the fabric: Cut two pieces of fashion fabric 32 x 40 cm wide. Cut two pieces of lining fabric 32 x 40 and cut two pieces of interfacing 25 x 36 cm. Fuse the interfacing to your main fabric pieces (the interfacing pieces are smaller than your fabric, so try to place it in the center, leaving equal distance from the edges). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your iron’s settings.
Insert your zipper to the shorter side of your main fabric: To do this, open your zipper and put it parallel to the selvage of your fabric with the zipper teeth facing down. Put a lining piece on top of it (the 2 fabrics should
be right sides together). Pin all the layers to secure them in place and stitch, using a zipper foot.
Open it up, press and topstitch. Attach the zipper to the other fabric pieces in the same way.
Open your zipper a little bit and then open the clutch and match the lining pieces and the fabric pieces, rights sides together.
Pin all around.
Start sewing your main fabric pieces together, making a U shape. Stop before you reach the zipper teeth.
Sew the lining pieces together in the same way, but leave a gap on the bottom to turn over your clutch. Use this opening to open the zipper entirely and turn your clutch right side out. Press your seams and sew the opening closed. Push your lining inside your clutch, press it one more time and…
Hurray – you have made your own beautiful foldover clutch!
